Traditionally fingerprints were taken using the “ink and roll” method. This method involved using ink to accurately take a copy of your fingerprints. Processing time for this method typically took weeks or months, resulting in long turnaround times.
Due to advancements in technology, a new, clean, and more efficient method was developed. Digital fingerprints are taken and sent directly to the RCMP or government authority for safe, secure, and fast processing.
Our LiveScan Fingerprinting Technology
At Reliability Screening, we provide digital fingerprinting services using LiveScan technology. No ink or card is used to record your fingerprints. Using our LiveScan machine, your fingerprints will be “rolled” across a glass plate for accurate imaging.
The machine captures your fingerprints in a digitized format and then they get sent to the RCMP or government authority that is processing the background check. Digital fingerprints are mess-free and results can be returned to you in as few as 3 business days.
Reasons You May Need Fingerprinting Services
There are several reasons why you might be asked to submit digital fingerprints for a background check in Canada. Reasons for fingerprint-based background checks include:
- Visas for working, travelling, or studying abroad
- Canadian citizenship and permanent residency
- Employment request (RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check)
- Adoption applications
- Name change
- Criminal record suspension
…among others! Depending on the type of background check that you’re applying for most background checks accept digital fingerprints. If ink (rolled) fingerprints are required, it will be made clear during the process.
How to Prepare for Having Your Fingerprinting
Having your fingerprints scanned is a straightforward process and with our expertise, we’ll be able to ensure that we capture the best image possible.
There are numerous reasons why fingerprints are rejected such as being pressed too lightly, pressed too hard, fingertips being too dry, or too sweaty, or your fingerprint may not be legible. Most of these are manageable and an expert will be able to guide you during the fingerprinting process to get the best image.
In preparation for your fingerprinting appointment, whether you’re getting a digital scan or ink-rolled, there are a couple of things you can do based on your specific situation:
- Dry fingertips: use lotion leading up to your fingerprinting appointment to make it easier for your fingerprint to transfer
- Sweaty fingertips: Use cold packs or ice water to cool them down. Be sure to wipe your hands dry before scanning or applying ink
